China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and Regional Transformation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Opportunities, Challenges, and Development Outcomes

Abstract

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one of the biggest development projects in Pakistan and is considered a harbinger of regional change. This study quantitatively analyzed the economic development, infrastructure development, employment generation and socioeconomic impacts of CPEC in KPK from 2015 to 2025. The secondary data was obtained from government documents, development statistics and official economic statistics. The results showed that the length of the road network increased from 8,420 km to 10,950 km, a 30.0% improvement, and motorway connectivity went up by 162.7%. Direct employment grew from 38,500 to 92,600 (+140.5%) while indirect jobs grew by 123.8%. The number of industrial units rose from 1485 to 2430 and foreign investment grew by 304.3% to USD 465 million. The volume of regional trade grew by 172.2% from USD 1.8 billion to USD 4.9 billion, while freight transportation grew by 131.5%. Socioeconomic indicators also significantly improved, as poverty decreased from 31.4% to 22.1%, household income grew by 80.6%, literacy rates went up to 64.8%, and basic service coverage went up by 34.5%. However, key challenges faced were security-related (31.5%), governance problems (24.8%), funding limitations (17.6%), environmental concerns (13.9%), and land acquisition disputes (12.2%). The researchers find that CPEC has played a transformative role in the region, bringing significant benefits in terms of connectivity, economic development and social progress to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, better governance and security management, environmental sustainability and inclusive development policies are necessary for sustainable gains over the longer term.
